    OPTIMASI USAHA PERIKANAN MINI PURSE SEINE DI KABUPATEN JENEPONTO PROVINSI SULAWESI SELATAN (Optimization of Mini Purse Seine Fishery in Jeneponto District, South Sulawesi Province)

    The small pelagic in Jeneponto is highly potential, but since 2001-2004 years there are degradation indication of haul activity wich marked by degradation of mini purse seine number. The objectives of the research are: 1) to estimate the level of MEY exploiting of small pelagis becoming target of mini purse seine, and 2) to determine production factors which is playing a part in improvement of productivity of mini purse seine. The production surplus method, Gordon Schaefer model and multiple regression analysis were used in this study. The result from bio-economic analysis showed that at actual condition have come near optimum level for exploiting of small pelagic. The optimum catch of small pelagic is 3.783.376,09 kilo grams per year with standard effort of 8.723 trip per year. Specially far mini purse seine, optimum effort is 47% from standard effort or equivalent by 26 unit of gears. Production factors that give signifiront effect to fish production of mini purse seine are machine strength, mini purse seine length and number of lamp.Keywords: optomization, mini purse seine, bio-economi

    Structural and Biological Behaviour of Co(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) Metal Complexes of Some Amino Acid Derived Schiff-Bases

    Biologically active tridentate amino acid (Alanine, Glycine & Tyrosine) derived Schiff-bases and their Co(II), Cu(II) & Ni(II) complexes have been synthesised and characterised on the basis of their conductance and magnetic measurements, elemental analysis and 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, IR and electronic spectral data. These Schiff-bases and their complexes have been evaluated for their antibacterial activity against bacterial species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonae, Proteus vulgarus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and this activity data show the metal complexes to be more antibacterial than the Schiff-bases against one or more bacterial species

    System Identification and Seismic Performance Evaluation of Earth Dams

    A system identification technique is developed to provide dynamic properties of earth dams from their seismic records. The technique is utilized to assess the capabilities and limitation of analytical models in terms of dynamic nonlinear constitutive relationships as well as damping. The technique is based on the least square method using Gaussian hypothesis. Earth dams are modeled as a three-dimensional nonhomogeneous visco-elasto-plastic soil structure. The forward problem is solved using a Galerkin-Ritz formulation in which the solution is expanded using basis function, which is selected to be the eigenmodes. The spatial variation of the excitation is considered by using global shape functions defined on the boundary domain to interpolate the input motion on the dam boundaries using recorded motion at discrete locations. The constitutive model is used to accommodate the nonlinear path dependent behavior of the dam material as well as coupling between different constituent of the soil mixture. The model is implemented using Druker-Prager multi-yield surface model and linear Kelvin-Voigt model. Application to instrumented dams, in recent earthquake, showed significant match between the recorded response and the optimal estimated response

    Isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria from ready-to -eat fast foods in Al-Quwayiyah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Food-borne pathogens are becoming a globally formidable health problem and perceived as a major health concern in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Contamination ensued through unclean raw food materials and particles, use of polluted water, unhygienic preparation processes and use of contaminated containers. Herein, the prevalence of food-borne pathogens in ready-to-eat (RTE) fast foods from fifteen different food eateries such as 7 restaurants, 6 cafeterias and 2 two college canteens in Al-Quwayiyah, Riyadh Region of Saudi Arabia was studied. Microbiological analysis of 155 fast food samples which included, Vegetable salad, Falafel, Kibtha and Shawarma. The isolates were detected using biochemical tests and API 20E and slide agglutination test were conducted for Salmonella spp. detection. Bacterial growth was found in all food samples tested. Moreover, the test also showed high levels of total aerobic count: vegetable salad 6.34+0.03, falafel 5.79 + 0.18, kibtha 5.06 +0.02 and shawarma 3.54 + 0.13. Organisms isolated include Salmonella spp. (15%), Escherichia coli (18%) and Staphylococcus aureus (7%). Salmonella is one of the most virulent pathogen implicated in food-borne disease outbreaks. There are numerous transmission routes for Salmonellosis, but the majority of the human infections are derived from consumption of contaminated poultry products. Consistently, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Heidelberg are the three most frequent serotypes recovered from humans each year. Serologically identified Salmonella serotypes from RTE fast food samples were Salmonella Typhimurium with 65%, the most predominant one compared to Salmonella Enteritidis that was 35%. The bacterial count of vegetable salad, falahfel, kibtha was statistically significant when compared with Shawarma (p < 0.05). This result indicated that most of the ready-to-eat food samples examined in the study did not meet any bacteriological quality standard as recommended by The New South Wales (NSW) Food Authority to be <5.0 log10 CFU g−1 and, therefore, it poses potential risks to consumers.     A look at multiparticle production via modified combinants

    As shown recently, one can obtain additional information from the measured charged particle multiplicity distributions, P(N)P(N), by investigating the so-called modified combinants, CjC_j, extracted from them. This information is encoded in the observed specific oscillatory behaviour of CjC_j, which phenomenologically can be described only by some combinations of compound distributions based on the Binomial Distribution. So far this idea has been checked in pppp and e+ee^+e^- processes (where observed oscillations are spectacularly strong). In this paper, we continue observation of multiparticle production from the modified combinants perspective by investigating dependencies of the observed oscillatory patterns on type of colliding particles, their energies and the phase space where they are observed. We also offer some tentative explanations based on different types of compound distributions and stochastic branching processes.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures and 1 table.     Observations on the Pearl Oyster Fishery of Kuwait

    The pearl oyster fishery of Kuwait was monitored daily from January 1989 to May 1990. Landings of pearl oysters in 1989 totaled 287 tons with a market value of U.S. $1.0 million. Commercial pearls (\u3e3 mm) were estimated to be present in one of every 4200 oysters. Most of the pearl oysters landed were new recruits with hinge lengths between 40-56 mm. There was a curvilinear relationship between total weight and size of oysters (length) and the sex ratio approached 1:1. Spawning occurs throughout the year, with a spat settlement peak in early fall. Over the size range examined there was no relationship between the size of oysters and the size of pearls and subsequent resource management strategies are discussed
